LAB-O is een onderdeel van de academische bachelor architectuur en interieurarchitectuur aan KU Leuven — Faculteit Architectuur. Het vormt een experimentele leeromgeving waarin het maken op ware schaal, het kritisch evalueren en het reflectief handelen centraal staan. LAB-O richt zich op fundamentele aspecten van het ontwerpproces en stimuleert studenten om beeldend, materieel en conceptueel te communiceren. Binnen LAB-O ontwikkelen studenten hun vermogen tot verbeelden, verwezenlijken en beschouwen. Deze drie pijlers worden uitgewerkt in drie complementaire leerlijnen: Media, Expressie en Positioneren.
LAB-O is part of the academic bachelor's program in Architecture and Interior Architecture at KU Leuven — Faculty of Architecture. It functions as an experimental learning environment where working at full-scale, evaluating critically, and acting reflectively are central. LAB-O focuses on fundamental aspects of the design process and encourages students to communicate visually, materially, and conceptually. Within LAB-O, students develop their ability to envision, implement, and reflect. These three pillars are explored through three complementary programs of study: Media, Expressie and Positioneren

MEDIA De leerlijn Media onderzoekt de mogelijkheden en de rol van media, technieken en software in het ontwerpproces. Studenten leren hoe ze waarnemingen kunnen registreren, ideeën kunnen uitdrukken en ruimtelijke concepten kunnen communiceren. Zowel analoge als digitale methoden worden kritisch ingezet en gecombineerd. Door te experimenteren met tekenen, visualiseren en modelleren ontwikkelen studenten een persoonlijke beeldtaal en ontdekken ze de impact van beeldcultuur. EXPRESSIE Expressie is een leerlijn waarin studenten actief werken aan hun verbeeldend vermogen en ernaar streven ruimtelijkheid fundamenteel te begrijpen. Via experimenten op ware grootte — zoals tijdelijke ingrepen of site-gebonden installaties — wordt getest hoe ruimte kan ontstaan, beleefd en gestuurd worden. Zo leren studenten materialiseren en ruimtelijk ontwerpen op een abstract niveau en maken ze kennis met de werking van architectuur. Tegelijk verkennen we de ruimtelijke kwaliteiten van materialen, structuur, licht en kleur, als essentiële onderdelen van architectuur. POSITIONEREN In de leerlijn Positioneren reflecteren studenten over hun positie als ontwerper binnen een bredere maatschappelijke en disciplinaire context. Ontwerpopgaven vertrekken vanuit maatschappelijke urgenties, technologische ontwikkelingen en persoonlijke fascinaties. Studenten leren standpunten innemen en verbeelden, en maken deze tastbaar via ruimtelijke interventies. Positioneren creëert ruimte voor collectieve reflectie en stimuleert een kritische dialoog over de rol van ontwerpen in een speculatieve toekomst.
MEDIA Media is the program of study that explores the possibilities and the role of media, techniques, and software within the design process. Students learn to observe and capture spatial and material conditions, express ideas, and communicate spatial concepts. Both analog and digital methods are critically employed and combined. Through experimentation with drawing, visualizing, and modeling, students develop a personal visual language and discover the impact of visual culture. EXPRESSIE Expressie is the program of study in which students actively work on their capacity for imagination and strive to fundamentally understand the qualities of space. Through full-scale experiments, such as temporary interventions or site-specific installations, they test how space can be created, experienced, and shaped. In doing so, students learn to materialize and design spatially on an abstract level and are made familiar with how architecture operates. Simultaneously, they investigate the spatial potentials of materials, structure, light, and color as essential components of architectural expression. POSITIONEREN Positioneren is the program of study in which students reflect on their role as designers within a broader societal and disciplinary context. Design assignments depart from societal urgencies, technological developments, and personal fascinations. Students learn to formulate and visualize positions, making them tangible through spatial interventions. Positioneren creates a space for collective reflection and stimulates a critical dialogue about the role of design in a speculative future.
